Ik hoorde vandaag een nummer op de radio wat ik leuk mee kon blèhren, maar waarvan ik dacht: “Wie zingt dat eigenlijk?” Dat gebeurt me wel vaker 
en meestal denk ik bij het nakijken ervan “Ow jah!”, maar bij de uitkomst van deze dacht ik “Huh????” Dit nummer blijkt een wel heel apart fenomeen!
Het nummer waar ik het over heb:

Ik had nog nooit van de Australische band The Church gehoord. Dat kan gebeuren. Ik wist dat het nummer al ff meeging, maar dat het al 20!!! jaar oud was… dat had ik niet gedacht! “Under the Milky Way” blijkt stiekum een tijdloos nummer te zijn van heb ik jou daar!
“Under the Milky Way” is afkomstig van het album Starfish uit 1988 en het nummer is in 2001 gebruikt in de film Donny Darko en ook in 2006 bij de Common Whealth Games in Australië.
Dat het nummer al best wel oud is, is nog niet het raarste volgens wikipedia…. Ik plak de songtekst er gelijk ff onder:

According to a press release issued with Starfish, the song was written about an Amsterdam music and cultural venue called Melkweg (Dutch for “Milky Way”), which Kilbey used to frequent.
De Amsterdamse Melkweg? Que??? Op internet kan ik er helaas Melkwegwise niks meer over vinden…

Ha, leuk. Muzikale archeologie. Hmm, de C-14 proef vertelt me dat dit iets uit de jaren 80 is.
Opmerkelijke stem, die bijna bekend klinkt.
Enfin, het is destijds ook volledig langs me heen gegaan. Geen wonder, omdat dit nummer (en hun enige lichtpuntje op de Nederlandse radar) in de Tipparade bleef steken. In de UK deed het ook niets, maar in de VS bereikte het in ‘88 nog de 24e plaats.
